501,488. Alloys. NAAMLOOZE VENNOOTSCHAP PHILIPS' CLOEILAMPENFABRIEKEN. May 2, 1938, No. 13056. Convention date, May 5, 1937. [Class 82 (i)] A hard metal alloy is made by sintering a powdered mixture of tungsten, carbon, and cobalt in a graphite mould at a pressure of from 200 to 500 kilogrammes per square centimeter at a temperature insufficient to expel the cobalt and for such a time, for instance one hour, that the content of combined carbon is as high as possible whilst no free carbon is present, for which purpose the carbons content of the mixture is previously and exactly adjusted, preferably within about 0À1 per cent. The amount of carbon to be added is determined by microscopic examination of an etched testpiece, free carbon showing as black inclusions, and a lack of carbon producing a brightly coloured or white phase.
