501,246. Iodine-starch compounds; iodine. WILLIAMS, W. P. (Schering, R.) June 9, 938, No. 17217. [Class 2 (iii)] [Also in Group III] A stable iodine-starch compound is prepared by reacting an iodine-alkali iodide solution with starch suspended in glycerol or other liquid polyhydric alcohols, e.g. glycols, and removing the solvent. In the example, an aqueous solution of sodium iodide and iodine is mixed with ethyl alcohol and ether and treated for 8 days at ordinary temperature with starch ground in glycerol. The solvent and uncombined iodine are removed by washing. The iodine is split off from the product only by heating or by prolonged treatment with atkalies or organic solvents.
