Abstract

500,563. Sewing - machines. FAIRWEATHER, W. C. (Singer Manufacturing Co.) Aug. 11, 1937, No. 22067. [Class 112] A button-sewing machine is provided with a number of work-plates, each having a different form of work-supporting end, and a number of button clamps, so that by using a suitable work-plate and its co-operating button clamp, either flat or shank buttons of various types may be stitched on one machine. The machine 3 is of the type having a reciprocating needle 8 vibrated laterally by cam gear 24 on a shaft 25 driven from the main shaft 5 through worm and worm-wheel gear. A rotating chain-stitch looper co-operates with the needle. The machine shown in Fig. 1 is described in Specification 476,764 and is applied for the stitching of shank buttons. Fig. 2 is the same machine fitted with a flat-button clamp and work support B. Either bar A or B may be attached to the clamp-lifting chain C by means of a thumb-screw 100. The button clamp is shifted lengthwise when four-hole buttons are being stitched, by means of a slide 28 mounted in blocks 28x on the bed 1. In Fig. 2, ears 28c, at the ends of a transverse portion 28a of the slide, carry a pin 1) upon which the bar B<2> is pivoted. A rock-shaft 30, driven by an arm 32 and cam gear 33, 34, acts upon one end of a horizontally slotted arm 29. This arm is swung between two positions lengthwise of the bed 1. During the stitching of shank buttons and two-hole buttons, this swinging of the arm is an idle movement, but during the stitching of four-hole buttons it shifts the clamp lengthwise to transfer the stitching from one pair of holes to the other. A stud 36 is slidingly mounted in a slot 28b in the work-plate slide, and has a head 36a fitted in the slot 29a in the arm 29. The stud may be concentric with the shaft 30, in which case no movement is transmitted to the slide 28, but when the stud is moved along slots 28b and 29a motion will be transmitted from 29 to 28. The bar B<2> may be disconnected from the ears 28c and pivotally connected to ears 38 on the standard 2, see Fig. 1. Spacing plates may be used in conjunction with the work-plates to hold buttons at some distance from the work. Each of the work-plates is provided with two studs underneath, which engage a slot in a plate 41 secured to the forward end of the base 28. A spring clamp 46, secured by screws 45, is lifted to allow the insertion of a work-plate which is bevelled at one end. Operations for stitching flat or shank buttons, with or without stay buttons, by through-and-through or blind stitching, are described.
