Abstract

In a process for the production of alumina wherein aluminous ore is treated with caustic soda, the residual red mud is mixed with limestone and coal dust and treated in an electric furnace. A slag comprising calcium and sodium aluminates is formed and floats on a bath of cast iron. The slag is treated with soda and is transformed to sodium aluminate which is returned to the normal process for the production of alumina. Pyrites ashes may be mixed with the red mud to increase the yield of iron which may contain about 7 per cent silicon, a small percentage of titanium and less than 1 per cent of sulphur. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 is not limited to treatment in an electric furnace.ALSO:Cast iron containing about 7 per cent of silicon, a small percentage of titanium and less than 1 per cent of sulphur is obtained in a process for the production of alumina, wherein aluminous ore is treated with caustic soda, the residual red mud is mixed with limestone and coal dust and treated in an electric furnace. A slag comprising calcium and sodium aluminates is formed floating on a bath of the cast iron. Pyrites ashes may be mixed with the red mud to increase the yield of iron. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 is not limited to treatment in an electric furnace. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
