Abstract

498,347. Thermionic valves. NAAMLOOZE VENNOOTSCHAP PHILIPS' GLOEILAMPENFABRIEKEN. Nov. 23, 1937, No. 32265. Convention date, Nov. 26, 1936. [Class 39 (i)] An electric discharge tube for amplifying or generating electric oscillations is provided with a cylindrical tubular cathode 2, an anode 4 and two or more other electrodes, one of which consists of only a few rods 3 or plates which are arranged parallel with the axis of the cathode and by means of which electrons from the cathode are united into beams, means being provided near the extremities of the electrode system to control the shape of the cross-section of the electron beams in a direction parallel with the axis of the cathode. The control means may comprise rods 6 arranged at the ends of the system and connected to the cathode or to the control rods 3, the connection being made, if desired, within the tube. Plates or discs 5 may also be used in addition to or instead of the rods 6. An apertured intercepting electrode is arranged in front of the anode 4 or the anode may be apertured and arranged in front of a plate electrode. Grids may be provided between these electrodes or. between the control electrodes 3 and the intercepting electrode, one of which may serve as a screening grid. The anode may be coated with fluorescent material so that the form of the spot may be observed. A straight or exponential characteristic may be obtained by using intercepting electrodes having gauze covered apertures of predetermined shape, and a secondary-emitting electrode may be provided on the far side of a gauze anode, which may then be apertured to serve also as the intercepting electrode. The cathode tube 2 may be directly or indirectly heated and of circular, rectangular or elliptical crosssection.
