Abstract
496,839. Electron beam valves. M-O VALVE CO., Ltd., and WARREN, G. W. Nov. 19, 1937, No. 31876. [Class 39 (i)] In. a thermionic valve in which one or more beams of electrons from the cathode pass through a control grid and accelerating electrode to an aperture in a hollow anode or anodes as described in Specification 403,973, the electrodes are constructed and arranged so that the beam converges to a minimum cross section approximately in the plane of the anode aperture. Fig. 1 shows a valve which emits two electron beams comprising an indirectly heated cathode 1, control grid 2 accelerating screen electrode 4, and hollow anodes 5. A sheet metal auxiliary electrode 3 maintained at a constant (preferably cathode) potential converges the electron beam to a minimum cross section in the plane of the anode aperture. In Fig. 3 (not shown), the screen electrode is also of sheet metal and in Fig. 4 (not shown) the beam is converged by making the surfaces of the cathode, control electrode, and screen concave towards the anode. In Fig. 2, the two parts of the anode are combined into a single unit in the form of a cylinder with inwardly projecting fins 5. This form of anode is easily degassed by eddy currents.
