[Class 135] [Also in Group XXVI] A cock or valve for pipelines or apparatus working under a high vacuum is provided with a vacuum chamber d arranged between the valve member or plug b and a liquid seal g located above a gland f surrounding the valve stem so that any leakage of the sealing liquid passes into the vacuum chamber and thence by a connection e to the main vacuum system without entering the pipe-line or other apparatus. The valve stem is provided with a collar c or is reduced in diameter to provide the chamber d. The cup h for the oil seal is integral with the valve casing q. The vacuum or negative pressure in the valve is balanced with that in the chamber d so that there is no tendency for fluid to pass from one to the other. According to the Provisional Specification a similar arrangement may be applied to the sealing of the gland of a vacuum pump.
