Abstract
497,937. Electrolytic production of organic acids and their salts from raw materials. BUSICO, U. June 25, 1937, No. 17756. Convention date, June 27, 1936. [Class 41] Raw material containing organic acids or their salts and in addition colloidal albuminous and pectic substances is electrolysed in aqueous condition with current density 0À5-1 amp per sq. dcm. of anode surface in order to coagulate the colloids which are thereupon removed by filtration. The electrolysis may be conducted in a diaphragm cell. In an example raw material containing potassium bitartrate is placed in the anode compartment and a solution of potassium carbonate in the cathode compartment. Tartaric acid free from colloids is obtained in the anode compartment. Alternatively the raw material may be placed in the cathode compartment and sodium carbonate solution in the anode compartment; potassium bitartrate free from colloids is formed in the anode compartment. The raw material may be placed in both compartments with formation of tartaric acid in the anode compartment and neutral potassium tartrate in the cathode compartment. By the use of an iron anode, ferropotassium tartrate may be obtained in fine crystals. The invention may be applied to obtaining citric acid from lemon juice and acetic acid from pyroligneous acid.
