Abstract
1,263,818. Maintenance of electrolytic diaphragm cells; electrolytic production chlorine. PPG INDUSTRIES Inc. Nov.12, 1969 [Nov.13, 1968], No. 55261/69. Heading C7B. In a process for producing chlorine and alkali metal hydroxide in a diaphragm cell, when the liquid level difference between the anode and cathode compartments becomes excessive the cell is disconnected electrically, the brine flow is stopped and the diaphragm is contacted with a water soluble hydroxy carbonylic compound to restore the permeability thereof. The compound may be added in aqueous solution to the anolyte compartment, passed through the diaphragm and withdrawn from the cell. The solution may contain 5-90% of the compound. Suitable compounds are hydroxy carbonylic acids, such as gluconic acid, their salts, ethers, esters or lactones.
