[Class 134] The opening of a telescopic umbrella is facilitated by a helical spring which embraces the runner. Stretchers 10, Fig. 3, are pivoted at one end to sleeves 9 fixed to the outer rib members 6 and, at the other end, to a ring 19 slidable on the runner. Links 17 connect the stretchers 10 to a ring 16 which is fixed on the runner. A spring 20 is mounted between the rings 16, 19. A stop 24 on the runner limits movement of the ring 19, and the runner is adapted to be pushed up to the crown 26 and is held by a spring 23 engaging in a slit in the runner. In another form, the ring 19, Fig. 10, is fixed on the runner, and the spring 20 is partly housed in a sleeve 28, which is slidable on'the runner and is limited by a stop 29. The spring is adapted to push the runner up to the dead centre position, i.e. to the position in which the struts are at right-angles to the stick, and the runner is then moved further by hand. Each link may be pivoted to the mid-point on the stretcher.
