Abstract
A primary or secondary amine of aliphatic character is brought into reaction with a cellulose sulphonate, particularly an aryl sulphonate, soluble in organic solvents until a sufficiently large proportion of amino group has been introduced to yield a product soluble in dilute acid. The cellulose aryl sulphonate employed may be obtained by reacting an aromatic sulphonyl halide with a solution of cellulose or a cellulose derivative in aqueous alkali. For producing cellulose derivatives soluble in at least a stoichiometric proportion of 5 per cent aqueous acetic acid, at least 0,5 amino group should be introduced for each glucose unit of the cellulose product. Filaments, films, and other shaped articles, and coating compositions, may be obtained or prepared from the alkyl amino cellulose product. In an example, methyl cellulose p-toluene sulphonate is dissolved in n-amylamine and the solution is allowed to stand for several days. The resulting amyl - amino-(methyl) cellulose is precipitated with aqueous alcohol. The viscosity of the solutions of the product in dilute acetic acid may be varied by adding hydrogen peroxide. Cellulose ether amines may also be obtained from methyl cellulose benzene sulphonate, glycol cellulose b -naphthalene sulphonate, or glycol cellulose p-toluene sulphonate, and methylamine, di-methylamine, ethylamine, propyl, butyl, or amyl amine, or a mixed amine such as methylbutylamine. Benzylamine, ethanolamine, or 2-amino-cyclohexanol may also be used. The amino cellulose derivatives are soluble, in the form of their salts, in water. Coating-compositions containing the amino celluloses may also contain plasticizers, thickeners, wetting agents, mildew inhibitors, adhesives, insecticides, anti-oxidants, oils, waxes, and pigments. They may be used for coating wood, paper, stone, brick, plaster, asbestos, or textile materials. The coating-composition may be an aqueous dispersion of titanium oxide containing salicylanilide as mildew preventative, a wetting agent, a softener, and an alkylaminocellulose salt as dispersing agent.
