Abstract
A lubricant for fibres, particularly those which in the undressed state are liable to electrification and those which have a basis of cellulose acetate, contains in solution a salt of a quaternary ammonium base and an organic sulphonic acid, and preferably also contains a fatty alcohol containing at least 12 carbon atoms which may be oleyl alcohol. Preferably all the quaternary ammonium and the amino groups (if present) in the bases are aliphatic groups and those bases containing two or more quaternary ammonium groups are particularly effective, suitable bases being lauryl trimethyl ammonium hydroxide, dimethyl-methyl ethanol-ammonium hydroxide, triethyl ethanol-ammonium hydroxide, cyclohexyl diethylmethyl ammonium hydroxide, ethylene bis-(triethyl ammonium hydroxide), ethylene bis-(diethyl ethanol ammonium hydroxide), hexamethylene bis-(triethyl ammonium hydroxide) and ethylene bis-(lauryl diethyl ammonium hydroxide). The salt preferably contains a straight chain of at least 8 carbon atoms, particularly valuable salts being those derived from aliphatic sulphonic acids, particularly those containing at least 8, preferably at least 12, carbon atoms, in which the aliphatic radicle of the sulphonic acid is an unsubstituted saturated hydrocarbon radicle, preferred acids being cetyl, stearyl and particularly lauryl sulphonic acid. A suitable lubricating composition contains by weight 7.5 per cent ethylene bis-(triethyl ammonium lauryl sulphonate), 7.5 per cent methyl cyclohexanol, 5 per cent oleyl alcohol, 40 per cent white mineral oil and 40 per cent Arachis oil.ALSO:Salts of quaternary ammonium bases and organic sulphonic acids are prepared by the reaction of the free quaternary ammonium base in a suitable solvent, particularly methanol, with the free sulphonic acid, or by the double decomposition of the halide, sulphate, oxalate or other suitable salt of the quaternary ammonium base and the sodium or other salt of the organic acid in a medium in which one or other of the reaction products is soluble, such as water. Alternatively, the salts may be prepared by reacting a tertiary amine with the appropriate ester of the organic acid. For example, triethyl ethanol ammonium hydroxide is prepared by ethylation of monoethanolamine with ethyl chloride in stages and the quaternary salt then formed by reacting the base with lauryl sulphonic acid; diethyl ethanolamine is recovered as a by-product. The aliphatic sulphonic acids may be prepared by reacting an aqueous solution of the sodium salt of the corresponding aliphatic sulphate with sodium sulphite at elevated temperatures, e.g. above 170 DEG C., and pressures, e.g. about 500 lbs. per sq. in.ALSO:Textile materials, particularly those which in the undressed state are liable to electrification and those which have a basis of cellulose acetate, are dressed with a salt of a quaternary ammonium base and an organic sulphonic acid. Preferably, all the quaternary ammonium and the amino groups (if present) in the bases are aliphatic groups and those bases containing two or more quaternary ammonium groups are particularly effective, suitable bases being lauryl trimethyl ammonium hydroxide, dimethyl-methyl ethanol-ammonium hydroxide, triethyl ethanol-ammonium hydroxide, cyclohexyl diethyl-methyl ammonium hydroxide, ethylene bis-(triethyl ammonium hydroxide), ethylene bis - (diethyl ethanol - ammonium hydroxide), hexamethylene bis-(triethyl ammonium hydroxide) and ethylene bis-(lauryl diethyl ammonium hydroxide). The salt may be applied to the textile materials in solution in a lubricating oil, particularly one containing a fatty alcohol containing at least 12 carbon atoms which may be oleyl alcohol, a suitable composition containing by weight 7.5 per cent ethylene bis-(triethyl ammonium lauryl sulphonate), 7.5 per cent methyl cyclohexanol, 5 per cent oleyl alcohol, 40 per cent white mineral oil and 40 per cent Arachis oil.ALSO:Textile materials, particularly those which in the undressed state are liable to electrification and those which have a basis of cellulose acetate, are dressed with a salt of a quaternary ammonium base and an organic sulphonic acid.
