Abstract

494,606. Alternating-current motors. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. July 20, 1937, No. 20095. Convention date, July 22, 1936. [Class 35] A motor comprises a multipole stator wound to produce a rotating field, an unwound motor with salient poles the number of which is half that of the stator poles and means, such as a permanent magnet, for producing a unidirectional radial field in the rotor of strength approximately equal to the maximum field produced by the stator winding. In the arrangement shown, a stator with twelve polepieces 1.... 12 is wound with a twophase winding to produce a six pole rotating field. The rotor 18 has three poles 19, 20, 21 each extending over 60‹, and is provided with a squirrel-cage starting winding 14. Two rotors of this type are mounted on a non-magnetic shaft 29 and form the polepieces of a cylindrical permanent magnet 13. Co-operating with the rotors are two stators connected by a magnetic yoke 15. The two rotors and stators may be similar or have different numbers of polepieces. A modification is described with a single rotor and stator, the rotor being mounted on an elongated core of magnetic material and the second stator being replaced by an annular permanent magnet.
