Abstract
494,304. Automatic guns. BOULTON PAUL AIRCRAFT, Ltd. (Soc. D'Applications des Machines Motrices) April 22, 1937, No. 11474. [Class 92 (i)] Relates to automatic machine guns of the kind in which the gun-support 2 is adapted to recoil with respect to the gun mounting 4 against the action of combined spring and energy-absorbing damping means which serve to control the recoil and run-out. According to the invention, the stiffness of the spring 6 and the value of the damping force are so related to the mass of the recoiling parts and the force of recoil that, when the gun is firing continuously, the support 2 does not return to its initial position but is kept in steady oscillation at a periodicity equal to the gun's normal rate of tire, each shot being fired during run-out at the same phase of the period, and the amplitude of recoil being thereby reduced. In the form shown, the machine gun is attached by lugs 5 to the support 2 which slides on guides 3. The spring 6 of chosen stiffness is initially adjusted by a screw 8 until the support 2 bears against buffers 9. Frictional damping on the guides 3 is adjusted by screws 10. The amplitude of recoil is represented in Fig. 4 as D for the first shot and d for continuous fire and the first and subsequent shots are fired at the periodic times marked A<1> to A<6>.
