Abstract

Homogenizing apparatus for emulsifying liquid mixtures comprises a restricted orifice 1 terminating in an annular conically-formed surface 3 to which the materials are delivered under pressure. A spherical ball 4 is seated on the annulus 3, and a suitable pressure is applied by the spring 5. The materials are emulsified by passage between the ball and the annulus and are delivered through orifice 12. Leakage past the spring pad 7 is prevented by gland 15 and packing 16. The radius of curvature of the spherical ball is about 3 times or more and preferably at least 4 times the width of the annulus 3, and the radii of the ball 4 and the aperture 1 are preferably in the ratio of 8 to 5. The annular surface is preferably <PICT:0494204/III/1> flat, but may be convex, e.g. the cross-section may be arcuate, having a radius not substantially larger than the radius of ball 4. The device may be used for the preparation of ice-cream, bituminous emulsions, and the pressure applied to the ball will vary according to the materials, and the degree of viscosity required, e.g. a pressure of 600 lb. sq. in. is suitable for a cod-liver oil emulsion.
