[Class 38 (v)] In a multi-pole overload switch a housing a is divided into chambers c, d, e, corresponding, e.g. to the three phases of a three-phase supply, and each chamber contains a coil i which serves to heat a thermal element h, to energize an electromagnet m and to generate a magnetic blow-out field for switch contacts v, t. A moderate overload causes one or more of the thermal strips h to bend to the right and actuate a bar to cause contacts g in a holding circuit to open, which in turn causes the contacts u to move away from the fixed contacts 8. An excessively high overload causes one or more armatures n to be rotated about its pivot o by its magnet m and to actuate a bar l which similarly causes the contacts g to open.
