[Class 39 (iii)] Water is heated by the passage of current between fixed hollow electrodes 3, carried by insulated studs 4, anc outer electrodes 6, the current being regulatec by a movable insulating cylinder 7. The insulating cylinders of all the electrodes are connected to a common plate car ried by a rod 9 which is movable vertically. Ir the minimum load posi. tion, an insulating disc 10 closes the open end of the cylinder 7, and an insulating disc 11 closing the upper end of the electrode 3 contacts with an insulating disc 12 carried by the supporting plate. A small hole 13 relieves compression when the parts approach minimum load position. Passage of current between the electrodes in that position is prevented. Similar means may be applied to flat plate electrodes, Figs. 6 and 7 (not shown), and to arcuate electrodes, Figs. 8 and 9 (not shown). In another modification, Figs. 10, 11, 12 (not shown), the current is varied by moving the outer electrode, the inner electrode and insulating cylinder being fixed. When the relatively movable parts are close fitting a scraper ring may be provided to remove scale.
