Abstract
493,416. Fluid - pressure servomotors. ENGLESSON, J. E. Jan. 14, 1938, No. 1361. Convention date, Jan. 15, 1937. [Class 135] [Also in Group XXXIII] A hydraulic servomotor for changing the pitch of screw blades has such motor with an associated control valve disposed in the propeller hub or the propeller shaft and is characterized in that the control or distributing valve is mounted in the movable member of the servomotor which is provided with stops which limit the relative motion of the two whereby, after the first part of the valve movement initiated at the control position, the two parts then move together. The propeller boss 1 is provided with a cylindrical extension 7 within which is disposed the piston 6 which is secured to a sleeve 5. The sleeve 5 has a slotted member engaging a block 13 containing a pin 14 on a ring 11 secured to the blade root, whereby longitudinal movement of the sleeve provides a rotary motion of the blade for changing its pitch. The sleeve 5 has ports 21 and 22 adapted to be put in line with corresponding ports 19, 20 in a hollow tube 23 constituting the control valve disposed within the member 5. This tube has an outer flange 29, movable between surfaces 27, 28 on a member secured to the sleeve 5. The interior of the tube 23 is coupled through the hollow extension 18 with a supply tube 33a in a ring encircling the propeller shaft 2 whilst the space between this hollow tube 23 and the sleeve 5 is in connection via the passage 26 with an outlet pipe 33b in that same sleeve. The tube 18 is extended for connection with a cross member 34 passing through slots in the main shaft and coupled to an encircling sleeve 35. When the sleeve is given a small movement to the right or left, tube 23 is correspondingly moved and puts the port 19 or 20 in line with the port 21 or 22, and the piston 6 is thereby moved until the flange 29 engages one of the stops 27 or 28, whereupon the parts then move together. For moving the sleeve 35 a pivoted lever 36a is coupled to a tube 47, a part of an elastic coupling 37, the ends of which are connected by a flexible link with an operating arm 38. The central rod 48 is connected by a flexible link with an indicating arm 41 mounted on the same shaft as the operating arm. Except for the small initial out-of-phase, the arm 41 reproduces the movement of the operating gear and thus gives an indication of the blade setting. In a modification, the connecting rod for the blade adjustment is carried through the hollow shaft member, and the piston and control valve is mounted in a cylinder adapted to encircle the inboard end of the propeller shaft.
