Abstract

524,091. Fluid-pressure servomotors. COCKBURNS, Ltd., GRANT, T., and RODGER, J. Jan. 21, 1939, No. 2161. [Class 135] A control apparatus for steam engine manoeuvring valves comprises a power device having a plurality of pistons fixed to a common piston rod and simultaneously operable in separate cylinders under the control of a manually actuated control valve. The Figures show an assembly of three manoeuvring valves 1, 2, 3 for ahead, astern, and " cruising " manoeuvring respectively. The spindle of each valve is rigidly connected to three pistons 5, 6, 7 working in cylinders 5a, 6a, 7a and is also coupled by a lever 12 to a followup member 11 arranged to co-operate with ports in the tubular control valve 10. The control valve appertaining to the valve 2 is operated by an arm 22 fixed to a rock shaft 17 while the other control valves are actuated by similar arms selectively coupled to the shaft 17 by a slidable coupling 19 operable by a hand lever 23 fitted with a locking catch 24. A direct manual actuation of the main valves is provided by a'series of screws rotatably mounted on the casing and carrying traversing nuts coupled to the valve spindles by levers 27 normally disabled by removing the pivot pins and inserting them in housing sockets 30. According to the Provisional Specification throttling needles may be fitted in the passages connecting the cylinders with the control valve and direct manual operation provided by a manually operable member coaxial with the valve spindle and engaging a screwed spindle extending through the lower cylinder cover. The external member turns in a bush which can be held at will against axial movement.
