Abstract
Fibres or slivers are produced by delivering streams of fibre-forming liquid from nozzles on to a collector device, the nozzles and collector constituting electrodes in a circuit provided with a spark gap and supplied with high potential pulsating direct current, controllable means being provided in series with the supply for periodically interrupting or reducing the high potential across the spinning field between the electrodes. The controllable means may be an auxiliary spark gap, a rotary interrupter of variable speed, a condenser across the spark gap, a switch in the high <PICT:0492966/IV/1> potential circuit, or a means for periodically inserting a resistance in the circuit. In the Figure, the spinning solution is extruded through nozzles 10 adjacent to a field-directing means 30, and the filaments formed are collected on a collector consisting of a number of individual electrode elements 15 supported on the belt 14. The supply 13 of pulsating direct current is connected through the adjustable auxiliary spark gap 40, 41 to the nozzles 10 and field-directing means 30, and also to the wire 18. The gap between the wire 18 and the collector elements 15 constitutes the main spark gap. Specification 480,950 is referred to.
