Abstract
A refractory composition having substantial strength in the unburned condition comprises material containing a substantial amount of physically stable non-hydrating calcium silicate, water, and a bonding agent comprising a carbonate, bicarbonate, fluoride, sulphide, arsenate, dichromate or hydroxide of an alkali metal, preferably normal sodium carbonate. The invention is applicable to all refractory materials which contain a substantial proportion, 20 per cent or more, of di- and tri-calcium silicates stabilized against hydration and dusting, e.g. bodies disclosed in Specification 450,961. In an example, a dead burned refractory made as described in Specification 450,961, and containing on analysis, 20 per cent of CaO and 7,8 per cent of SiO2 is crushed from 2,5 mm. to dust, tempered with water and 1 to 2 per cent of anhydrous sodium carbonate. The mixture may be moulded and dried and is adapted for use as brick, moulded in place material or refractory cement.
