Abstract
492,431. Electric resistances. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd. Dec. 10, 1937, No. 34261. Convention date, Dec. 24, 1936. [Class 37] A resistor having a high negative temperature coefficient, comprises a granule consisting of a crystal or a cluster of boron crystals 11, permanently joined to lead wires 12, 13, for example of platinum, palladium or iron, by a compound of boron and the metal lead wire. The joint is formed by applying a pin-point flame to the point of contact between the lead wire and the boron crystal when a small mass of boride of the metal constituting the lead wire is formed and effects the joint. The boride is a good conductor and the resistance value of the resistor may therefore be fixed at any value by the area of contact between the boride joint and the crystal. The lead wires 12, 13 are welded or otherwise secured to supporting wires 14, 15 sealed into a protective glass tube 16 which may be exhausted or contain any suitable gas.
