Abstract
491,854. Elastic braid. PRICE, W. H. March 9, 1937, No. 6953. [Class 74 (i)] Relates to the use of elastic threads to help in forming scalloped edges or other effects in lace &c. made on braiding-machines. Fig. 1 shows a piece of the finished braid with scallops c. Fig. 2 shows a small piece of the same braid in process of making. The elastic threads b and non-elastic threads a are both drawn from traversing bobbins. The threads a traverse some in one direction and some in the other direction, to form the substance of the scallops c. The elastic threads b, preferably wrapped with cotton &c., are traversed under tension from the extreme edge of the material to a suitable distance in the width of the fabric and back again. When the tension is released the scallops are forced out as shown in Fig. 1. Other elastic threads y combine with the body threads to produce longitudinal elastic pillars. These threads may be drawn from running bobbins or passed up through the centre plates. There may be two sets of traversing scallop-forming elastic threads. When the finished braid is to be sewn on to a knitted fabric or run on the needles of a knitting-machine the other, unscalloped edge j is made from comparatively fine threads.
