Abstract
490,946. Mercury switches. CIANCHI, A. Feb. 24, 1937, Nos. 5597 and 19150. [Class 38 (v)] Energization of a coil 6 depresses plunger 4 to force mercury past a ball valve 7 to flow over the edge of vessel 3 into vessel 2 to complete a circuit between electrodes 8, 9. Energization of a coil 10 surrounding electrode 9 which is magnetic, draws valve 7 downwards to allow the mercury to return and break the circuit. Instead of having an outer vessel 2, the contact 8 may be arranged ina side limb of vessel 3. In a modification the plunger can be held in the depressed position by an external permanent magnet and released either by removing the magnet or by applying an opposing electromagnetic field. A changeover switch is described, in which a third electrode dips down inside the plunger which is provided with a valve in the manner described in Specification 453,229. Instead of releasing the valve by means of a solenoid, a time delay can be introduced by providing a small opening adjacent to or in the seating of the valve. The time delay may be varied by tilting the base on which the switch is mounted.
