Abstract
490,822. Windows. BOOTH, W. C. Feb. 22, 1937, No. 5245.. [Class 20 (iii)] The hinged stile of the sash frame of a casement window is divided longitudinally, as shown in Fig. 1, the outer part 5 being hinged to the fixed frame 9 on the outside thereof and the inner part 6 being hinged to the outer part 5 on the inside thereof, and the portions of the sill 12 and head-rail 17 which normally abut the sash frame are hinged to turn downwardly and upwardly, respectively, from these positions, as shown in Fig. 2. The sill 12 is held in its normal position by a bolt provided in a recess 14. The rail 17 is shaped with a step 20 which normally engages the top rail of the sash. When it is desired to turn the hinged sash inwardly, the rail 17 is pushed upwardly into a recess 16 in the head of the fixed frame ; the sash is turned slightly about the outer hinge 8, and the two parts 5, 6 of the hinged stile are then capable of being moved relatively to each other about the hinge 10. In returning the parts to the closed position from the position in which the sash is swung inwardly, the top rail of the sash engages the rail 17, which is then in its lowermost position as determined by recesses 19 in the side members of the fixed frame, and moves the rail 17 upwardly into the recess 16. When the sash is in its closed position, the rail 17 automatically drops into engagement with the top rail of the sash. The hinged sash of the metal casement shown in Fig. 3 is formed of a channel-section 31 and a Z-section 34, these members being hinged together at 33 and the member 34 being hinged to the fixed frame 36 at 35. The sashabutting portions of the sill and head-rail, in this construction, are of L-section, and, when the window is open, are swtmg into a horizontal position in which they are partly housed in channelled portions of the fixed frame.
