Abstract

490,322. Locating sounds. SCRUBY, B., and ROBERTS, A. J. May 25, 1937, No. 14517. [Class 118 (ii)] In a system for determining the direction of a sound source, microphones 4, 5, mounted on a rotatable beam 11 are connected to thermionic amplifiers 15, 16 feeding cathode-ray tubes 19, 20, which give images of the sound waves on their screens. The screens are focused on a viewing screen 33, the light being reflected from a rapidly rotating inclined mirror 23. The final images 32 may be viewed directly or through a lens 35 and are brought into coincidence by rotating the beam 11 to remove the phase difference. In a modification, a right-angled prism is used in place of the mirror 23. The images on the screen 33 may be adjacent, or superimposed for accurate matching. As applied to the detection of aircraft a third sound receiver is necessary or a pair of receivers may be added arranged at right-angles to the original pair.
