Abstract
489,316. Surgical tubes. DAVIS & GECK, Inc. April 27, 1937, No. 12033. Convention date, May 5, 1936. [Class 81 (ii)] Surgical tubes, employable for drainage purposes, for anastomosis, for supporting or replacing parts of body ducts, or as nerve, tendon, or like sheaths, are sterile, and are constructed of absorbable animal tissue as by winding, wrapping, braiding, spinning, or forming the tissue, in thread, ribbon, or pulp form, over a mandrel or core, form-pressing it to shape and removing the core, a binder such as glue being employed. The tubes may be plain, or of T- or Y-form, or may be flared or flanged at one or both ends, or of bobbin shape, or may have tapered ends with peripheral grooves for convenience of tying. The material preferably employed is the submucous layer of animal intestinal tissue. The formed tubes may be treated to retard absorption in the body by immersion in formaldehyde solution or in a liquid petroleum product sold under the Registered Trade Mark " Aboline," or by coating with keratin, paraffin, or resinous material, As shown, aT-tube is made by helically winding a ribbon 9 of absorbable animal tissue in a double layer of overlapping turns upon a T-shaped former, the part 14 of which is screwed to part 12. After setting and form pressing, with or without heat, the parts 14, 12 are removed. For a Y-tube a former comprising two parts screwed together is employed, the parts consisting respectively of one limb of the Y, and the other limb and stem combined.
