Abstract

489,108. Heating water. GENERAL INVENTIONS, Ltd., and FOWLER, C. R. Jan. 19, 1937, No. 1636. [Class 64 (i)] In a water heater comprising a vertical water pipe 1 and a gas burner 13 around the lower end and heat exchange ribs 16 around the upper end of the pipe, as described in Specification 459,082, the refractory casing 14 through which hot gases flow along the pipe is surrounded by spaced open-ended sheetmetal cylinders 22, 24. The supply of gas to the burner is controlled by a disc-shaped valve 36 operated by a thermostat 6 heated by the inlet water through a wall 35 of the inlet junction 7. A valve 44 at the gas inlet to the burner tube 12 is held open by a thermostat 45 above the pilot-jet 46 when the jet is lit, and is closed when the pilot-jet is extinguished. Screwed plugs 8, 34 in the inlet and outlet junctions 7, 33 provide access to the tube for cleaning purposes. The water flow through the inlet junction is adjusted by a valve 9.
