Abstract
488,648. Hydraulic power transmitters. LAVAUD, D. S. DE. Dec. 3, 1936, Nos. 33231 and 33232. Convention dates, Dec. 17, 1935 and March 31, 1936. [Class 69 (ii)] In a hydraulic torque converter of the F÷ttinger type and in which the reaction member has a one-way mounting, the turbine blades each comprise two elements, a rigid element and a flexible element, connected together only at the inlet ends. Each turbine blade comprises, Fig. 3, a rigid front element 26b and a resilient rear element 26a. The elements 26a are acted on by fingers 28 formed on a ring angularly movable relatively to the turbine shell under the influence of centrifugal masses 31 pivoted at 30 to the turbine shell and connected at 32 with said ring. The resilience of the elements 26a is such as to urge their free outlet edges into contact with the fixed elements 26b located behind them so as to close the passageway for the liquid between two adjacent blades ; said passageways are not opened until the impeller speed reaches a certain value, the elements being then forced back against their resilience by the liquid flow. As the speed of the turbine increases, the relative liquid flow decreases, and the resilience of the elements 26a, aided by the effect of the masses 31, moves the elements 26a in the direction to decrease the passageways and so increase the speed of flow through the turbine from inlet to outlet thereof. When impeller and turbine rotate at the same speed, the passageways are completely closed. The pump blades may each comprise a pivotally mounted flexible inlet portion 6 and a radially arranged rigid exit portion 11 ; alternatively, as shown in Fig. 6, the pump blades may be flexible throughout, being pivotally mounted on the pump shell at 8 and having a pin-and-slot connection with the shell at 8a, 8b. The blades may alternatively be rigid radial ones. The outlet end of the pump is unbladed and shaped to constitute a " diffuser." An electromagnetic clutch for giving direct drive, as described in Specification 471,729 may be provided. A builtin gear pump circulates liquid through the working circuit and through a cooler ; filters may be provided. In a modification, Fig. 14, the pump blades each comprise a pivoted resilient inlet element 6 and a built-up main blade 80 having a radial rigid inlet portion and a freely flexible outlet portion.
