Abstract

Printing or padding on textile materials with vat or sulphur dyestuffs is effected with the use, as assistant, of a water-soluble salt of a cymenesulphonic acid. Specified salts are those of sodium, potassium, ammonium, iron and copper and of organic bases, such as aniline, ethanolamine or pyridine. The printing paste may contain also (a) a water-soluble alcohol, such as glycerol, ethylene glycol or thiodiglycol, (b) a hydrotropic agent, such as urea, diethylmetanilic acid, benzylaniline sulphonic acid or a salt of an aromatic carboxylic acid, (c) a reduction catalyst, such as anthraquinone or its hydroxy derivatives, (d) a reducing agent, such as sodium hydrosulphite and (e) an alkali, such as sodium ammonium or magnesium hydroxide or sodium or potassium carbonate. In examples, (1) a filter press cake of 2 : 1 : 21 : 11 - naphthioindigo is ground with sodium cymenesulphonate, sulphite cellulose liquor, sodium carbonate, b -hydroxyanthraquinone and water and the mixture is sieved, evaporated to dryness and incorporated in a printing paste; (2) an aqueous printing paste is prepared containing Cibanone gold orange G, wheat starch, tragacanth mucilage. British gum, potassium carbonate, glycerol, sodium formaldehydesulphoxylate and sodium cymenesulphonate; (3) an aqueous paste containing 2 : 1 : 21 : 11 - naphthioindigo, glycerol and sodium cymenesulphonate is concentrated, ground, sieved and incorporated in a printing paste; (4) an aqueous paste containing Cibanone violet 2R, Cibanone blue GCD or Ciba blue 2B and potassium cymenesulphonate is dried and incorporated in a printing paste, a hydrotropic agent, or a protective colloid, such as sugar or sulphite lye, being added, if desired, before or after the drying. Specifications 334,878, 334,919, 338,104, [all in Class 2 (iii)], and 343,596 are referred to. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 comprises also additional examples in which the dyestuff in (2) above is replaced by Cibanone blue 3G or GCD or Ciba blue 2B and one in which cotton goods are printed with an aqueous paste containing the dyestuff obtained by sulphurizing the leuco compound of the condensation product from p-nitrosophenol and carbazole (cf. Specification 280,595, [Class 2 (iii)]), potassium carbonate, sodium formaldehyde sulphoxylate and sodium cymenesulphonate and the printed goods are steamed, rinsed, and soaped. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
