Abstract
486,236. Drive of paper - making machines. HEYS, R. C. March 19, 1937, No. 8066. [Class 96] [Also in Group XXIV] In order to obtain fine adjustments in papermaking machinery to keep the tension or " draw" of the paper correct, the V-rope drive between a power shaft 1 and a shaft 9 connected to reducing gear in a box 10, comprises expanding pulleys 7, invariable pulleys 6, and jockey pulleys 12. The pulleys 12 are operated by a hand lever 18, Fig. 2, also connected to belt-spreading mechanism 20, 22, 24. The latter comprises shoes 22 carrying rollers 24 and adapted to be moved along the grooves of the pulleys 7 when the pulleys 12 are moved to engage the ropes 2, Fig. 2, by depressing the lever 18. The shoes are connected by toggle links 19 to the lever and carry rollers 24. When the pulleys 12 are retracted the shoes and rollers are moved round the pulleys 7 to engage the ropes and separate them from the pulleys 7 to stop the drive. Each of the jockey pulleys may be fitted with a compression spring which comes into action when the pulley is pressed against a belt. The flanges of the pulleys 12 may be spring-pressed so as to be resilient in relation to one another.
