Convention dates, Feb. 17, 1936, March 18, 1936, March 18, 1936, and Aug. 6, 1936. [Class 118 (ii)] [Also in Group XXXIX] To limit the distance of propagation of sounds from public address loudspeakers a zone of interference is produced by the interaction of sounds radiated by two or more reproducers. As shown in Fig. 1 two sources 1 and 2 radiate sounds which are 180‹ out of phase so that a zone of interference is produced which is symmetrical about the axis 5. A number of pairs of loudspeakers may be arranged in a circle. A curved band of interference as shown in Fig. 6 may be obtained by making the transmissions slightly less than 180‹ out of phase. This phase displacement may be obtained by adjustment of the loudspeaker or by providing a lag in the path of one transmission by delay networks, by recording or by spaced microphones in a sound chamber. To prevent interference between the microphones and loudspeakers, the microphones are placed in the interference zones. Specification 133,394, [Class 118 (ii)], is referred to. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 includes the subject-matter of Specification 486,038, namely the provision of adjustable deflectors to direct the sound. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
