Abstract

An aqueous preparation suitable for use in dyeing live hair comprises a synthetic organic hair dye, a monohydric aliphatic alcohol containing at least 8 carbon atoms in the molecule or a monoester of a dihydric or polyhydric aliphatic alcohol with a fatty acid containing at least 12 carbon atoms in the molecule and an emulsifying agent consisting of either (a) an alkali salt of a sulphonated aliphatic alcohol with at least 8 carbon atoms in the molecule or (b) an alkali salt of an aliphatic sulphonic acid with at least 8 carbon atoms and with or without nitrogen in the molecule. Cholesterin may advantageously be incorporated. Specified dyeing compounds are aromatic diamines, e.g. nitro - p - phenylenediamine and m- and p-toluylenediamines, aminophenols, e.g. nitroaminophenols, p-nitrophenylglycine, 4 : 41-diaminodiphenylamine and 1 : 5 - dihydroxynaphthalene. The alcohol or ester is melted, the emulsifying agent is uniformly admixed, water is added to form a paste and, when this has thickened on cooling, the dyeing compound is uniformly admixed. For use a small quantity of hydrogen peroxide is added. In examples, preparations are obtained containing (1) stearic acid monoglycol ester, the sodium salt of lauryl alcohol sulphuric acid ester, p-toluylenediamine sulphate, ammonia and water (dyeing blonde); (2) stearic acid monoglycol ester, sodium oleylmethylaminoethanesulphonate, p-nitrophenylglycine, ammonia and water (dyeing yellow blonde); (3) myristyl alcohol, the sodium salt of lauryl alcohol sulphuric acid ester, m- and p-toluylenediamines and water (dyeing blue to blue-green); (4) myristyl alcohol, sodium oleylmethylaminoethanesulphonate, sodium 4-nitro-2-aminophenolate and water (dyeing red); (5) palmityl alcohol, sodium oleylmethylaminoethanesulphonate, 4 : 41-diaminodiphenylamine, 1 : 5-dihydroxynaphthalene, benzyl alcohol, ethyl alcohol and an aqueous soap solution (dyeing blue-green).
