Abstract

Hydrophobic properties are imparted to fibrous materials comprising nitrogenous substances of high molecular weight and of colloidal character by incorporating with the fibres a urea derivative or an aliphatic monocarboxylic acid amide free from hydroxyl groups containing an alkyl group having at least 11 carbon atoms and then causing the compound on or in the fibres to react with an aliphatic aldehyde. Preformed condensation products may be used and acid substances may also be present in the treating baths. Suitable fibres include wool, natural silk, casein or gelatine artificial silks, animal hair, felts, bodies made from horn, tanned or untanned hides, and acetate artificial silk containing a basic nitrogenous polyvinyl resin. Suitable ureas or amides include lauric acid amide, stearoylmethylamide, stearoylbutylamide, stearoyloctadecylamide, or the corresponding methylol compounds. The process may be applied after a pre-treatment such as the treatment of wool with chlorine or hydrogen peroxide. In examples: (1) wool piece goods are treated in a bath containing lactic acid then in a carbon tetrachloride bath containing montanic acid methylolamide and then heated, (2) wool piece goods are impregnated in an ethyl alcohol-carbon tetrachloride bath containing stearic acid methylolamide and lactic acid and then heated, (3) wool piece goods are impregnated in a hot solution of montanic acid methylolamide in tetrachlorethane, (4) artificial fibres from rennet-casein are impregnated with a solution of N-heptadecyl-N1-methylolurea and lactic acid in alcohol and carbon tetrachloride and heated, (5) wool gabardine is impregnated with a solution of stearic acid amide in carbontetrachloride, dried, and impregnated with aqueous formaldehyde containing lactic acid and finally heated. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 refers also to pre-treatment of the fibre with ethylene oxide, propylene oxide, epichlorhydrin or similar compounds and contains examples of pretreating wool piece goods with ethylene oxide followed by treatment as in example (2) of the Specification as accepted and of pretreated dyed natural silk piece goods with butadiene dioxide followed by impregnation in a bath containing methylolcarbamic acid octadecyl ester in tetrachlorethane followed by drying. The Specification also refers to the use as urea derivative of mono-iso-butylurea. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
