Abstract

485,352. Discharge apparatus. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. Aug. 18, 1937, No. 22689. Convention date, Aug. 19, 1936. [Class 39 (i)] A discharge device is provided with an electron-emitting cathode and with apparatus which varies periodically the gas or vapour pressure by one or more powers of ten in such manner that the lowest pressure obtains during the blocking period. A rectifier comprises a discharge space S, Fig. 1, which has a cathode K and anode A, is supplied with gas through a valve V and is evacuated through a connection P. The valve V operates in rhythm, with suitable phase displacement, with the applied alternating potential ; the natural frequency of oscillation of the valve may be equal to that of the applied potential. The gas may be supplied as shown to the cathode K, Fig. 2, and the gas pressure restricted to the cathode by guides L. Pumping through the connection P may be intermittent and through the connection S continuous to maintain the anode A in a region of low pressure. Ignition may be controlled by a grid which is arranged between the anode and cathode and is preferably arranged so that its surfaces cover those openings in the cathode which face the anode. In another form, the anode A, Fig. 3, surrounds the hollow cathode KE which is provided with a shield KS and a heater KH. Gas is admitted to the vessel through a valve V which is controlled by an electromagnet energized by current of frequency which is the same as that flowing through the device. The anode leading-in wire passes through an insulator T which is sealed to the metal container by a ring D and has one part provided with a projection C. The expelled gas may be purified and again fed to the device. The maximum and minimum gas pressures may be 0À1 mms. and 10<-6> mms. respectively; the filling may consist of hydrogen, helium or neon. In a further form, two control grids which form guides for the gas stream may be provided between the anode and cathode.
