485,192. Manhole covers and frames. EVANS, D. Oct. 5, 1937, No. 26999/36. [Class 107] A manhole, drain, or like cover 1 has a, depending peripheral flange 4 which rests upon a packing ring 5 disposed in a groove 3 of the frame 2 and which is deeper and narrower than the groove so that it may enter the groove as the ring wears and thereby support the cover at all times. The upper traffic-bearing surfaces of the cover and frame are flush or substantially flush with one another. The ring may be made of rubber or of a white metal alloy and may be retained in position by any suitable cementitious substance. When the ring is of rubber the recess may be slightly dovetailed to hold the ring in position.
