484,886. Gearing varying in ratio as drive is applied to one or other member; engine turning-gear. MOISY, A. Nov. 16, 1937, No. 31498. Convention date, Nov. 19, 1936. [Class 80 (ii)] [Also in Group XXVII] Gearing automatically varying in ratio according to the sense of drive, particularly for use with a combined electric current generator and starter-motor of an internal-combustion engine, includes a double internallytoothed planetpinion 33, carried loosely on an eccentric 35, fast to the armatureshaft 12. The planet-pinion 33 engages a pair of sun-wheels, one 14 of which is rigidly connected by a toothed disc 37 to a casing 48, formed with a groove to receive a belt connecting it with the engine, the sun-wheel 14 being mounted on the shaft 12 by means of a one-way roller clutch 17, which thus provides a direct-drive from the engine to the shaft 12 when the machine is acting as a generator. When the machine is acting as a starter-motor, a reduced drive is transmitted from the eccentric planet carrier 35 to the sun 14 and casing 48, reaction being taken by the other sun-wheel 15, which is mounted by means of a one-way roller detent 22, acting oppositely to the roller clutch 17, on a sleeve 24, connected frictionally to the fixed machine-casing 13 by an endflange 26, adjustably pressed against the casing by a nut 29, acting through Belleville washers 28. This frictional connection slips in the event of a back-fire or excessive change of engine speed. The planetary gear is balanced by a counterweight 43.
