[Class 59] In a roller mill the gear wheel of the movable roller meshes with a pinion which is so located that the short arcuate path of the movement of the axis of the roller during adjustment is substantially parallel to the common tangent of the contacting pitch circles of the pinion and gear wheel. As shown the moving roller 2 is carried on an arm 21 pivoted at 18 and is movable relatively to the fixed roller 3 by an arm 15 operating an eccentric. A motor 9a on casing 5 pivoted at 6 drives a pinion 8 engaging a gear wheel 10 on the roller 3 and a gear wheel 12 affixed to a pinion 9 which is in mesh with a gear wheel 14 on the movable roller 2. An upper casing 7 is secured to the casing 5 to enclose the gear wheels, the lower casing containing the oil, which is still retained therein when the casing is dropped against stops 20, also carrying the motor 9a and gears 8, 9, 12. The axes of the pivot 18, roller 2 and gears 9, 12 lie on a straight line which is at right-angles to the line joining the axes of the rollers 2, 3 whereby movement of the arm 21 to adjust the clearance between the rollers moves the point of contact of the pitch circles of the gears 9, 14 substantially along a tangent to the pitch circles and hence parallel to the line joining the axis of the rollers whereby the mesh of the gear teeth remain substantially constant.
