Abstract

<PICT:0482174/III/1> <PICT:0482174/III/2> <PICT:0482174/III/3> A machine for polishing buttons comprises a frame 4 carrying a head 2 in which are rotatably carried a number of chucks 1, each of which holds a button. The head 2 is carried by a frame 27, 28 rotatably mounted on a fixed central shaft 5, the frame being driven by spur gearing 25, 26 driven, through elliptical gearing 23, 24 and a worm gearing 22, by a motor 6. The chucks 1 also are driven by the motor 6 through a worm gear 7 mounted on a frictionwheel 8 rotatable on the shaft 5, the frame 27 carrying a number of axially movable shafts 10 on which are secured friction-discs 9, and pulleys 13 driving pulleys 15 on the chuck spindles 16 through belts 14. The shafts 10 are pressed towards the wheel 8 by springs 11 and engage a stationary cam 12 formed so that as the frame 27, 28 rotates around the shaft 5, the discs 9 are driven, for a portion of a revolution of the frame, by the wheel 8, and are moved away from the wheel 8 for the remainder of the revolution of the frame; during the time the discs 9 are driven, the chucks 1 are closed on to the buttons by a stationary cam 21, which engages bolts 19 attached to the spindles 16. The chucks, during the time that they are rotated, carry the buttons slowly past several flexible polishing-discs 3 mounted on the frame 4 and driven by the motor 6; after passing the discs 3, the chucks open, and, by the action of the elliptical gearing, the rotation of the head 2 is speeded up. Wax is supplied to the discs 3 by devices 31.
