Abstract
482,111. Discharge apparatus. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. Sept. 7, 1937, No. 24433. Convention date, Sept. 7, 1936. [Class 39 (i)] In an arc discharge device provided with an ignition electrode which is heated by the passage of current and dips permanently into the liquid cathode, e.g. as described in Specification 457,742, to prevent a short-circuit of the heating portion of the electrode by the cathode, the electrode has a part 11, Figs. 2, 4, of its immersed portion insulated from the cathode by insulation 14 or is arranged within the remaining part 12 which makes contact with the cathode. The insulation may consist of quartz oxide or enamel and the insulated part of the electrode may be of comparatively large cross-section or made of a material the specific resistance of which is lower than that of the other part. Insulation 15, Fig. 4, may be provided between the two parts 11, 12. The cathode may consist of mercury, gallium or zinc and the ignition electrode of tungsten molybdenum or tunsgten carbide.
