482,010. Cutting-machines. SWIFT, jun., Inc., G. W. Jan. 21, 1937, No. 1820. Convention date, Feb. 1, 1936. [Class 31 (i)] [Also in Groups XVI and XXIV] In a machine in which a moving web is operated on at spaced points by tools moving therewith, the spacing of successive operations is altered by means of a variable speed drive and the speed of the tools at the moment of operation is kept equal to the speed of the web by the adjustment of two or more crankpins and slot mechanisms arranged in series. A shaft 8 driven through a variable-speed gear rotates a shaft 13 provided with elements 15 forming a slot to co-operate with a crankpin 16 on a gear 18 which meshes with a gear 25 provided with slot elements 21 co-operating with a crank-pin 22 carried by a tool shaft 5. The pins 16, 22 preferably carry anti-friction rolls 17, 24. The gears 18, 25 are journalled in a support 20 which is adjustable by a screw- and-nut mechanism to slide along guides 28. The screw is operable by hand or by a motor. The variable-speed gear is also adjustable by a motor, both motors being controlled from a switch-board. A pointer moving over a scale indicates the spacing of successive operations as determined by the setting of the variable-speed gear. The tools 1, 2 carried by intergeared shafts 5 are shown as cutters but may be printing, creasing, or impressing tools.
