Abstract
481,998. Preserving fodder. SCHMIDT, F. Dec. 4, 1936, No. 33352. Convention date, Dec. 17, 1935. [Class 5 (i)] Green fodder is siloed under great pressure whereby the expressed sap remains over the mass of the fodder. In some cases sugar, acid, and lactic acid bacteria are added. Pressure may be applied to the material in a silo 1 having toothed racks 2 in its end walls by a hand lever 7, 9 engaging a rack or chain and pivoted to a movable part 6 resting on a press check 5 above the press cover 4. The cover may be held by a bolt 10 and a chain 14. The lever may be jointed at 11 to obtain convenient positions of the handle. In a modification, one part of a jointed lever engages a rack on the silo and carries a pawl in engagement with a toothed sector on the press cheek, the other part carrying a pawl for engagement with the sector. In other forms, pressure is applied to the press cover of the silo by screws acting directly or through simple or compound lever devices. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 comprises also the arrangement of a strong spring between the press cheek and a pressure-applying lever or screw, and also the provision of toothed racks movable in the walls of the silo and anchored at their lower ends by springs arranged in casings. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
