[Class 120 (i)] A web or lap of fibres formed by a mixture of wool and /or cotton fibres with waste materials such as torn-up rags is subjected to an elastic pressure and to friction whereby the hard twisted threads will be untwisted and opened, small pieces of fabric torn up into the form of flock, and bodies of vegetable origin crushed. The web 1, Fig. 1, detached from a doffer 3, passes between two smooth rollers 4, 5 which may be cylindrical, conical or frusto-conical and are weighted or spring-pressed together. One roller is preferably formed with a rubber or like surface and the rollers are rotated at different speeds to produce a slip of, e.g. about one-tenth of the speed of the upper roller. This slip produces the friction action which serves to untwist and open the twisted yarns. In a modification, an upper roller 4 co-operates with a stationary lower plate 6 having an elastic layer 7, Fig. 2, or the lower member 6 may be of convex or cylindrical form, Fig. 3, and the web supported on endless bands 9, 10. In a further modification, an endless elastic yielding member supports the web between a lower flat member and the roller. The slip between the two members may be continuous and constant in value, or may be alternating or take place by jerks.
