[Class 78 (i)] For loading and unloading timber to and from ships there is provided on the wharf side 4 a jib 2, comprising two laterally spaced girders pivotally mounted about a shaft 19 at the upper end of a pivotally mounted trestle 3. A depending arm 12 is pivoted to the free end of the jib. Tracks are formed in the jib and arm in which run chains to which L-shaped carriages 32 are secured, the carriages being provided with wheels which run in the tracks. The timber is placed across the carriages. For varying the inclination of the jib there is provided a supporting frame 38 pivotally mounted at 39. One arm 40 of the frame is provided with rollers 43 bearing on the girders of the jib and is swung by a hydraulic ram 48. The frame is counterweighted by a weight 46 connected to its other arm. The two arms are braced by a tie-bar 42 and wire ropes 66. Links 50, 52 pivoted together at 54 are pivoted to the arm 12 and jib 2 respectively and are operated from a hand wheel 60 through worm gear 58 and bevel gear 56 to vary the angle between the arm and jib. The chains are driven by sprocket wheels on the shaft 19. The timber may be discharged on to or taken off an auxiliary conveyer 74. The two chains may be driven at different speeds whereby the timber is delivered at an angle.
