Abstract

480,349. Coating metals with metals ; fluxes. BROWNBACK, H. L. June 18, 1936, No. 17027. Convention date, July 5, 1935. [Class 82 (ii)] [Also in Group XXII] Casting composite articles.-A ferrous bearing shell 1 or other backing is lined with leadbronze, copper-lead, brass, or other cuprous bearing alloy by welding or otherwise securing it to a crucible 6 containing the bearing metal 9, heating to melt this out of contact with the backing, as shown, and keep it molten while brought into contact with the shell, by inversion or rotation about the axis of the shell in a horizontal position, and so kept for 2 to 6 min. to allow the copper to penetrate. The bearing is then rapidly cooled while in lining position. If the alloy contains much lead it should be shaken before and after the soaking step. If the shell is rotated this may be slow for the soaking step but must be rapid just before cooling. If the furnace has an oxidizing atmosphere, salicylic acid or other volatile flux may be introduced into the crucible. The shell is preferably first pickled, and coated internally with copper and externally with a hardening compound 1.0. When the shell is precoated with copper the soaking step may be omitted. If the casting is done by inversion a core 3, having a closed end 4 with a vent 5 is preferably welded to the annulus 2. In modified arrangements the shell is coated both inside and out when inverted by the same or different alloys, this arrangement with two crucibles 6a, 6b being shown in Fig. 4. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 comprises also a modification in which a steel strip is cleaned, passed through. a copper-coating bath, and fed to a furnace while a measured amount of bearing alloy, in the form of powder, strip, or wire, and, if desired, a volatile flux, is placed thereon. The coated strip is cooled by a jet of fluid. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
