Abstract
496,319. Bearing bushes; casting. GENERAL MOTORS CORPORATION. Oct. 15, 1937, No. 28094. Convention date, Nov. 30, 1936. [Class 12 (i)] [Also in Group XXII] A loose bearing bush comprises two separate members 5, 7, in contact with one another, the exposed faces of which have a layer 6, 8, of bearing metal fused thereto, the members 5, 7, being permanently secured together to form a unit. The members 5, 7, are preferably of iron or steel, and the bearing metal is a plastic bronze composed of lead and copper. To manufacture the bush an iron or steel shell 14 is welded at 16 to a spaced tube 15 and the whole is heated to a bright red. Molten bearing metal 18 is poured into the annular space between the parts 14, 15, and then the whole is rapidly cooled from the outside. When cold surplus material is removed to leave a steel or iron tube 5 coated on the inside as shown dotted in Fig. 3. By a similar method the part 7, 8, is formed. The two compound tubes are then assembled and secured together as by shrinking or by welding the members 5, 7 together.
