Abstract

479,967. Crossheads ; pistons ; stuffing-boxes. HEDGES, H. O. Oct. 20, 1936. No. 28528. [Classes 122 (i) and 122 (v)] In an engine in which the crosshead moves laterally in its guide, the piston-rod packing is constructed to permit such movement. The crosshead comprises rollers 24 adapted to bear during alternate strokes on the opposed parallel walls 26 of the guide way, the distance between the walls being slightly greater than the roller diameter. The rod packing rings 36 are mounted with radial clearance in grooves 35 in an axially split casing 30 secured by a nut 31. The piston is secured to its rod by a bolt 15 extending through a ring 12<1> and screwing into the rod. Lubricant is supplied from the crank shaft through the connecting rod, crosshead and piston rod to radial channels in the piston opening at the periphery thereof. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specifications 944/89, [Class 122], and 382,116.
