Abstract
479,462. Batteries. CARPMAEL, A. (I. G. Farbenindustrie Akt.-Ges.) Aug. 6, 1936, No. 21720. [Class 53] The electrolyte of a battery is thickened with an alkyl cellulose ether which may be introduced into the battery in various ways. In one method a mixture of methyl cellulose ether and a solution of the chlorides of ammonium, zinc and mercury is heated and cooled and then poured into the battery. The mixture sets to a jelly after a few hours. In another method the positive eleotrode of a dry battery is wrapped in a tissue of cotton and a mixture of methyl and ethyl cellulose ethers which form a jelly with the electrolyte. Ethyl cellulose ether may also be mixed with a solution of magnesiwn chloride and mercury chloride to form a jelly electrolyte. Another method consists in providing an electrode of compressed pyrolusite with a layer of an alkyl cellulose ether having the soluble ingredients of the electrolyte incorporated therewith. When the electrode is inserted in the battery the soluble salts dissolve to form the electrolyte which is converted into a jelly by the alkyl cellulose ether.
