Abstract
A mixture of a cellulose derivative or a synthetic resin and a plasticizer, moistened with a non-solvent for the cellulose derivative or resin, is converted into a powdery or granular form by extruding it in rod-like form through an extrusion machine and, if necessary, disintegrating the extruded material. The rods need not be of round cross-section, and may break up into granules under their own weight. This breaking-up may be assisted by cutter blades close to and preferably on the feed side of the extrusion plate. The extruded material may be obtained in granular form by maintaining the extrusion temperature below 34 DEG C., while continuous rods are produced at higher temperatures, e.g. 50--70 DEG C. or more, so that the non-solvent evaporates. Suitable non-solvents are water, alcohols, ethers, benzene and other hydrocarbons, and the proportion thereof may be 50--150 per cent of the weight of the cellulose derivative or resin. Mixtures produced as described in Specification 476,638 by applying plasticizer uniformly over the surface of moistened particles of plasticizable compound may be used. The plasticizer may be dissolved in a medium which is a non-solvent for the plasticizable composition. A number of cellulose derivatives, synthetic resins and plasticizers are specified.
