Abstract

<PICT:0380820/III/1> A process for homogenizing and refining a soap base consists in forcing the plastic soap repeatedly through orifices to form threads which may then be moulded into bars &c. Partially dried soap chips, containing 12 per cent of moisture, are fed together with perfumes, dyes and fillers, through a hopper 10 into a jacketed chamber 12 heated to 100 DEG F., in which is mounted a feed screw 14. The soap is submitted to shearing action and is forced under a pressure of about 250 atmospheres by the screw 14 and rotating blades 20, through a screen 16 of 20 mesh supported by a plate 18. The soap threads thus formed are submitted to further similar treatment in two chambers provided with screens 28 and 40, of 30 and 40 mesh respectively, and at an increased temperature of 10 to 20 DEG F. By this process, a partially dried soap base, sprayed dried granules &c. containing hard particles are rendered homogeneous, and coarse materials are removed.
